Little-Know Facts About Feet

  • Twenty-five to forty percent of all Americans have foot problems, mostly caused by improperly fitting footwear.
  • Seventy-two percent of Americans wear shoes that don't fit properly, and the majority of those are too short and too wide.
  • One in three of all foot problems have been treated with surgery, 20% have had other treatments, and the rest have been untreated.
  • So-called "flat feet" is the most common entity perceived - about five times more common than high arch feet.
  • Other common problems vary by age group but include plantar calluses, warts, ingrown toenails, corns, bunions, and hammertoes.
  • Other than flat feet or high arch feet, other problems are rare under 15 years of age, suggesting that age and environment are factors in the appearance of these disorders.
  • An estimated four to seven percent of the adult population have foot problems that require some special footwear - which amounts to 10 - 18 million people for whom standard off-the-shelf shoes may not be adequate.
  • There are 1.2 billion pairs of shoes sold in the US each year by approximately 200,000 shoe salespeople employed in more than 50,000 shoe stores and departments where footwear is available. However, estimates show that only 25% of consumers can actually remember the last time they had their feet measured.
